RECOMMENDED EYE EXAM FREQUENCY
AND MSP COVERAGE

Children and teens (under 19 years old) should have exams every year as their eyes are still in the process of growing. This makes them more likely to experience changes in prescriptions, problems with their eyes working together, or problems with eye development. The province of BC feels it is so important to have children examined yearly that their exams are covered by the medical services plan (MSP), and at our clinic there is no additional fee. Don’t let them start school without one!

Healthy adults (aged 19 to 64) should be seen every 2 years, or more often depending on their risk factors.  If a more frequent follow-up plan is required, your eye care practitioner will let you know. Eye exams may be partly covered by MSP for adults if medically required.  Ocular disease, trauma or injury, systemic diseases associated with ocular risk such as diabetes and hypertension, and those taking medications associated with ocular risk may have partial coverage through MSP.  Ask at your next appointment.

For seniors (aged 65 or over), the risk for ocular disease increases dramatically. Seniors need to be seen every year and their eye exams are partly covered through the provincial medical services plan.

The fee for an eye exam ranges in price depending on age, health and contact lens use, so please call to ask about your particular situation. The coverage through MSP for a portion of your exam may only be confirmed at the time of the appointment.
